How to get a title for a classic vehicle with only a bill of sale?
Well I just bought a 1968 Ford F100. It has been sitting in a scrap yard since '01. I bought it from Kansas, but you live in Missouri. I got a bill of sale. Is there a way for me to get a title for it? The truck doesn't run. It's a project.
It may be a long process.
Go to your county court house and talk to someone in the titles and registration office. Make sure to bring the vehicle identification number. You will have to pay for a title search. And they will issue you a new title which will be mailed to you. Where I live it costs twenty bucks if they haven't raised the price in ten or so years.
There are several classic car title firms available. Check your Missouri state DMV laws too. Here in Texas we have what is called a bonded title. You go to a title bond agency and pay @$150. In a set period of time you may file for a fresh 'blue' title. The vehicle is now legally yours. I've one myself that I need to get a bonded title on.
In my state, any car 74 and older the state no longer issues titles. A bill of sale is all you need. (Assuming it wasn't stolen)
So you could register it and buy a tag in my state but you would never get a title. Because they simply are not issued for old cars.
In such instances, getting evidence that whoever is selling it owns it can't hurt.
Tag receipt or bill of sale?
There's no guarantee you will ever be able to title it.
There's always a way. But you might not like the costs associated.
Easiest way is to find last registered owner, have him obtain a duplicate title to sign over to you.
Again it'll cost you money… If person is still alive that is…
Go to the DMV and they will tell you what you need to do to get title.
- How to get rid of my car without a title, but with the registration in my name? I have a 1998 Ford Taurus. The whole purchase in 2006 was a little shady, and I never acquired the title. Furthermore, the title has a lien on it. I bought it off the street from some guy and I never got the title from him (What was I thinking, yes I know). Long story short, no one has ever claimed it since 2006, I've had it since, and I want to get absolutely rid of it now, and I don't know what to do. Any ideas?
- How to get the title to my truck I just bought? I bought a small Ford Ranger pickup for only $500.00. I made the first payment and received a receipt. I made the second payment and he refused to give me a receipt. He gave me the keys and the truck. But no title or receipt. Now he said I never paid him and he wants another $250.00. What can I do legally? He refuses to give me back my $500.00. Said he doesn't have to because he is now going to repossess it.
- My warrantied cars Bill of sale says as is, are they pulling a fast one? I just bought a certified per-owned Ford with warranty and financed by Ford. Came home and realized the bill of sale says "as is" and the warranty paper has our signatures but no vehicle info. I have 3 days/300 miles to return it no questions asked. Are they trying to pull a fast one?
