What's wrong with my 05 Ford Taurus? Serpentine belt broke off?

The other day I was driving and my power steering locked up on me. I popped the hood and saw my serpentine belt broke off. I purchased another belt and another idler pulley and changed them both out. I cranked my car up and saw smoke coming from the belt as if it was rubbing against something. I took the belt off, cranked the car back up afterwards and noticed every pulley was in still motion except the crank shaft pulley. What could be wrong? Also my "check charging systems" lights came on.

Take the belt off & turn the different devices by hand, to see if one of them turns hard. All except the crank pulley should turn fairly easily.

  • How to put on a serpentine belt on a 99 ford contour with a 2.0l vct engine? My serpentine belt snapped so I went to advanced auto parts and bought a new belt. I have looked at the belt diagram on my car and it does not match my pulley system so I tried to put the belt through the pulleys and there's a lot of extra slack at the bottom can anyway give me the correct diagram or help me out?
  • New serpentine belt squeals? My dad replaced the serpentine belt on my car (07 Ford Fusion SEL) last weekend when I was home. I noticed my car makes grinding noises when I reverse it and a squealing/peeping noise when I turn now. Should I take it in and have a mechanic look at it? My car has never made that noise before, so it has to be from the new belt.
  • How long will this serpentine belt last? Its on a 2010 ford fusion. There's a big rip in it there's about 1/4 inch width left in one spot. How long will it last before breaking? I need to go 3 miles
  • 2001 Ford Taurus 3.0L SES flex fuel a/c bypassed by serpentine belt? I got a diagram from my mechanic in town for bypassing a/c pulley with a shorter serpentine belt but the back of the belt seems to be rubbing just slightly on the a/c pulley as it goes around. Is there any way of getting to the a/c pulley to remove it from the bottom of the car instead of having to remove all of the pulleys?
