Push the brake pedal
It could be the brake switch but, try this: set the parking brake, put the key in the ignition and and turn it to the first position; that's where you can use the accessories but the engine is not running.
Push the brake pedal and shift the driver selector into "N". Start the car. Keep your foot on the brake pedal just in case you have a bad parking brake.
Release the parking brake and shift the drive selector to the desired gear, "R" or "D".
The brake switch is easily replaced and cheap. I had a late 90's/ early 2000's Taurus that did this on occasion, even after replacing the switch.
- Why did my car start and die when put into gear? Now it won't start at all? It's a cold winter day (below zero) Car started right up! I let it run for about 2 minutes, I put it in gear and it just died. I figured it's cold out, not real surprising, but when I tried to start it again, it won't start! It runs fine just doesn't shift into fourth gear and the transmission light does come on after a while of driving it. I was wondering if it would be ok to take it on a 700 mile round trip drive? I know its not good for it I just need to know if I'm going to be stranded on the highway somewhere because my trans went out.
- Lost my only key to my car. It's an 02 ford taurus station wagon and has a chip in the key? Ordered and blank key. Going to get it cut then have it programmed. I have an extra key that will unlock my doors but won't start the car because it doesn't have a chip and isn't programmed for my car. Can I use my key that unlocks the door to get it cut and then use my vin to have them program it?
