Can JB weld fix a crack in my transmission case?
I have a 2000 ford taurus it had a small leak and i didn't know where it was coming from so I cleaned and degreesed my entire engine bay (screwed up some electrical in the process, i don't recommend). After i found that my transmission case has a crack going all the way up it. Any ways apparently the crack had gunk from old oil keeping it some what plugged, but now after i cleaned it off transmission oil pours out of the transmission, especially in reverse. I have been told that I need to replace it entirely (which I don't have the money for) or I could try to fix it my self with jb weld. I wanted to know if JB weld will work on a crack of that size? Is there any thing similar that works better?
I know its not a permanent fix but I'm just looking to get a little more life out of the car (like a year) then sell it or something.
Couple of things, you can either have a welder tig/mig weld the seam of the crack and it'll work next to forever. Or, if you really want to try the jb weld get a file and file it in an angle to create an inward triangle (a lot better than applying just on the surface), sand it with some sand paper to promote greater adhesion and clean it very well with brake and parts cleaner. Make sure there's no oily film on it and that it's completely dry before applying the epoxy. Also, don't use the JB kwik, use the regular one and let it cure for more than 24 hours before putting fluid back in to ensure full cure! Prep is always key on things like this!
You can have your's rebuilt with the components you have put into a used transmission case that isn't cracked but needs components. This might cost you have the price of a new one. But, check the factory warranty direct to see if that is covered under the lifetime warranty of the vehicle.
You have to be careful when cleaning the engine with water (but you know that now).
Yes, JB weld will definitely fix the crack. However, maybe the crack caused the gasket to seat wrong? You could try it and see if it works. JB weld will be permanent (not just a one year fix). It will outlive the metal that your engine is made of.
One caution about JB weld: You can't get it off. So, make sure that it goes where you want it to.
Argh… I can just picture you under your car with your hand glued to the transmission case. "Hello, is this AAA? I need a tow truck and a skate board to roll under the car."
Nope. Broken internal part which in turn has broken the case. Will need rebuilt. This is a common problem with the Taurus. At one time we were doing several a year don't see as many as we use to since here in the northeast the 2000's are ending up in the junkyard. Find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help

Also if I can what transfer case to use with it?

- How much does it cost to weld a Mustang Mach 1 uniframe together? I'm contemplating buying a 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1 for a full restoration. The only problem is, the frame was cut in two. I have been told it can be welded back together but i wanted to ask before i went any further to see if this is cost prohibitive.
