Valve job on a 98 ford ranger 145k miles?
So i took my truck to my mechanic and he said there was a miss fire in cylinder 4 he tried to see if it the plugs and coils and what not but he then said I needed a valve job and it would be $2500 is that a reasonable price? What should I do? Any advice?
Why spend that on an 18 year old car worth about 1500? Put the money towards a newer car. This one has had it. Beyond economic repair. Try another mechanic. I don't think this guy is straight. Cheaper to fit a used engine.
Hi yes that is very reasonable considering the engine has to have it's head taken off for new valves to be fitted.
Sounds outrageous to me*. You could get rebuilt heads and have them installed for a lot less.
Or purchase another complete truck pull the engine and sell the 2nd truck to a salvage yard to recoup some of the cost.
Over the years I have purchased several vehicles and pulled front clips/engines/transmissions etc. Then sold the carcass to a salvage yard. On one occasion I got all of my money back in the process.
Bottom line, get at least one more estimate.
* I'm assuming a V-8, 2 hrs tear down, 1 hr to drop off and pick up at a machine shop, 2.5 hrs reassembly + $300-$500 machine shop cost. Or somewhere between $750 and $1,100.
- I have a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L 2 Wheel Drive which I suspect the Proportional Valve maybe malfunctioning? When applying my brakes while slowing down from freeway speeds, I feel a pulsating sensation which seem to come from the rear drum brakes. Once my speed go below 40 MPH, the pulsation disappears. I don't have this problem when stopping from below 40 MPH. The rear brakes don't lock up when I apply brakes at any speed. But it could be that the pulsation while breaking down from high speed is normal.
- On a 2000 ford ranger, will driving it without a catalytic converter cause valve issues? My ford ranger has had the cat removed (not by me!) and it is causing an O2 sensor code, of course, and an overly rich exhaust and poor fuel milage. Now, I know it needs fixed and I will when I get the time to get it to a muffler shop, but my question is, will driving it for a little while right now cause any valve trouble or any damage elsewhere?
- Will a Ford Focus with 116K miles on it do a road trip from the UK to Germany? (2,500 miles)? It's got 116K on the clock, had a new Cambelt 3 months ago, four new tires two weeks ago and drives great, was serviced at the same time as getting the tires done but would it do the road trip? Going over 5 days. Please only answer if you know about cars, I'm not looking for uneducated opinions in the nicest possible way. It might be helpful to add that it's a 2002
- Ford focus tramsmission cylinoid 1 bad. 145k should I fix? Transmission cylinoid 1 bad. Shop said need to fix 1 and 2. Also said drive 1 not working. Said no guarantee it'll fix problem 50/50 might need whole tranny. Ford focus 145k. Just dumped $500 in last 3 mos now this! I have money into it and can't afford to buy another car right now but also don't want t to dump $400 and have it still not drive right. Why can't they know for sure if it'll be fixed. They read the computer code and teat drove it. Should I fix it?
