Possible engine swap from 3.0 to 4.0 on 1994 Ford Ranger XL 4x4 manual?

I'm wondering if I can drop a V6 4.0L engine straight into a V6 3.0L Ford Ranger XL? Both are 1994 ford rangers, everything the same as far as model/year just different size engine… And if not, what would need to be converted? I found a 4.0 for $250 with 0 miles so if its as simple as swapping engines/trannys I'm going to go for it… Thanks for help!

Not a bad swap, if you have the whole parts truck. Otherwise, a headache. A 3.0 is not like a 4.0, completely different engine.

I doubt that the zero time 4.0 liter engine you have found for $250 is a complete running engine. More likely to be a "short block" that you will have to add all the other components from a different 4.0 liter engine to make it run. You'll also need a new emissions control computer and maybe a different wiring harness.

This IS NOT a "simple" engine swap.

The transmissions are the same for both the 3.0 and the 4.0 A automatic transmission in the 91-94 model is the A4LD model transmission. The manual transmission in both models is the Mazda M5OD. You will have a code T in the tran section listed on your vehicle safety certification label attached on the end of your driver side door. The 4.0 may fit, but you'll probably have to change the computer, wiring harness to computer, and if you click on the link below then scroll down that page to the motor mount diagrams, you'll see that they're different between the 3.0 and 4.0.

  • Engine swap for a 2005 3.0 ford ranger possibilities? I really want to add a good chunk of horse power to my ford ranger, and the only way i'm seeing that happen is with a complete engine swap and probably tranny too. What engines will fit without too much hastle? Please keep in mind that the more horses and torque the better.
  • Clutch slipping on 94 ford ranger 4x4 v6 4.0 manual trann? I recently bought a 94 ford ranger V6 4.0 4x4 manual, but the clutch is definitely slipping. I bought a new clutch set, master cylinder, slave cylinder, hydraulic release system, and upgraded clutch hydraulic line connection from Power Torque… Does anyone know all the tools I will need? As well as a step by step installation guide? I don't have $2,200(the lowest price in town) to spend taking it to a shop… Please help!
  • 1998 3.0L 4x4 Manual Ford Ranger towing 1500lbs with tow package? I'm not too worried about it on the freeway, how will it do on moderate uphill road? I want to buy a boat and take it up to the lake. The boat I'm looking at weighs about 900 lbs, so I'm making a liberal estimate with trailer, gear, and gas.
