1996 Ford ranger accelerstion/clutch issue?

At a stop, clutch pressed in with brakes pressed. Start to release the clutch pedal alongside stepping on accelerator. Truck slowly starts to move at maybe max of 10 mph. Loud clunk is heard from around where the tranny meets the engine, then truck accelerates like normal. Now when accelerating engine rpms do not rise alongside pressing the accelerator, almost as if the computer is keeping it from happening. Issue has persisted for awhile, haven't had the chance to tear apart. If torn apart I ll be replacing the flywheel, clutch l, pressure plate, slave, pilot, and the master. Just to eliminate any possible problems and the fact that I don't want to do it again for the 3rd time around. Previously replaced the clutch and slave at 130k. Now at 160k

I presume you have checked your oil because I had that sort of noise when I didn't have any oil in engine

I'm rather dumbfounded on this question. I'm not accusing you of make it up, just saying I've never come across this type of issue before. Probably because most cars and trucks I've ever worked on have "shift once" type transmissions (automatics)

But the loud clunk to me seems like something is binding and then "pops" into place. Since the truck accelerates slowly until the "clunk", I'm guessing that the clutch is slipping from not being fully engaged until the "clunk".

Since you don't want to have the same issue again, my suggestion is to check everything when the trans is out to make sure that nothing is binding. You've already stated that you intend to replace the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and master/slave cylinder. I would suggest that you check for binding at the clutch fork, which is used to disengage the clutch. Also check the cable to make sure that it too is not binding. Check the lines and hoses to the master/slave cylinder to make sure that they are not clogged which would cause a delay in the release of pressure for the clutch fork. Also check that the clutch pedal is not binding (releasing too slowly). That's all that comes to mind. I apologize for not being much help, but I hope that it gives some ideas.

Drop the transmission and inspect/rebuild the clutch. Replace the slave cylinder. Use factory parts. Use an alignment tool during installation.

  • My '83 Ford Ranger clutch won't release? It started by getting hard to shift into third gear when driving. Soon after, it wouldn't release whatsoever. Got new cylinders. Bled the system for three days. Got another set of new cylinders and bench bled it. Didn't help. The pedal feels mushy. Took the tranny out. No spring loose from the Clutch as some mentioned might be the problem. Everything appears to be as it should be. Any ideas?

  • 96 Ford Ranger clutch pedal? From time to time when I get into truck the clutch pedal won't go down. It hasn't happened while driving. After a little time it's back to normal. The truck did sit for a year, could this have anything to do with it? I'm not sure if I should be driving the truck or not. Insight please.
