Old Ford Transit. Won't stop

A mate is restoring a 1976 Ford Transit Pickup. It has a Ford 'York' 2.4 Diesel engine. The engine has been re-built and runs like a dream but it won't stop without stalling it! There appears to be some sort of electrical mechanism resembling a wiper motor with a cable so… How would that work? Anyone any ideas please? Totally puzzled!

You stop a diesel by either stopping the fuel flow or stopping the air. If it has an electric fuel pump, that's the easiest to access to stop the engine. If it has a mechanical fuel pump, then you need the cut-off the air intake. Probably some device to stop the air intake.

Since there's no "ignition" in a diesel engine, the only way to stop it is to stall it OR cut off air and fuel. I'm not really familiar with your engine, but perhaps the "wiper motor" thingy is there to close the throttle valve and cut off air to the engine.

  • Won't car companies release old-style vehicles? Old-fashioned vehicles but with modern internals? Like the Chevrolet in Pulp Fiction or 1966 Ford Thunderbird and such. They're so beautiful
  • My radio won't stop scanning, doesn't stop on any station, why? It's a stock 93 Ford Taurus radio, only am fm and cassette, cassettes work but I don't want to use. How can I get my radio to work again? My antennae was loose but I tightened it but it still won't work!
  • Restoring old Ford Transit. Can't get engine to start. Any ideas please? Friend is restoring 1976 Transit Diesel. Dry stored and in excellent condition. Re-conditioned injectors, clean fuel. Engine turns over valve-gear working (belt intact). Compression, fuel at injectors, no air in system engine turning over with new battery. Apparently no heater plugs on this engine (2.4). Tried eze-start just 'coughs' but will not actually start. At wits end! Any ideas please?
  • How old is too old for a truck? I'm looking to buy a box truck and found a 1990 Ford E 350 with 78000 miles on it. Does it matter that it is 27 years old? The owner said I need to replace the oil and tires. What else will need to be replaced? The asking price is $2750
