What size engine belongs in a 76 ford Mustang cobra?

2.3L i4, 2.8L v6, or 302 v8.

V8 put out a whopping 132 hp that year.

Just put a 302 in it that's stroked to a 347, a good set of aftermarket heads or heads off of a 1969-1973 351W, a good cam and lifter set and you'll make up for some very needed hp. If the car originally came with a 302 installed and you wanna keep it a matching numbers car, the block casting # is D5ZY-AA and it has a deck height of 8.229".

302 V8… The stock one only had about 140 HP, since the cobra package was apparently mostly cosmetic, but thankfully there's A LOT you can do to a 302 to get more power.

A 302 or 351 would be the best

"Belongs" is a very subjective statement. The original engine (the 302) belongs there if you are trying to make the car factory stock. Sadly though, 1976 was almost the epicenter of really poor performance due to the stringent emission regulations and the automotive corporations not really being ahead of them, technically. If I owned that car, I would look for a 1985 to 1993 HO engine out of the mustang and bolt it right in. It would increase horsepower in the range of an extra 80 to about 100 over stock. The swap is actually pretty straight forward, and the biggest item you need to change would be the oil pan.

  • Aren't you amazed by the capabilities and the size of today's full-size pickup trucks? I drive a 2011 Ford Ranger XLT 4x2 with a 4.0 liter V6 (~245 ci.) engine. I was looking up the specs for early-mid 1960s F100s (considered full-size), and they have nearly the same GVWR, towing capacity, payload, horsepower, wheelbase, and height as my "compact" truck. In your opinion, do you think today's full-size trucks are amazing or too fancy/over-sized (a traditionalist like me)? P.S.: I like all American vehicles
