You may have a bad Solenoid in the Valve Body. There should be a 700 series Trouble Code in the PCM if that was the case. But since you didn't tell the mileage, it could just be a worn out tranny that was never serviced until just recently. Check for codes.
Hi so slipping transmissions are due to wear hardly surprising in a car that has lasted twice as long as intended. If it is a manual gear change it is a simple clutch replacement. However as a lot are automatic this becomes a rather expensive repair. So time to be realistic about the modern car and get it fixed.

Once an automatic transmission starts to slip it needs rebuilding. You're looking at $1800.
