How to fix the distributor?
I have a 1968 ford f100 pick up and the distributor isn't working. How do I fix it?
Verify spark at the plug. Ohm check the wires inspect the cap and rotor, put a set of points and condenser in it, perhaps a new breaker plate. An open in the coil wire makes a short day of it.
You should, while cranking, have power on the + side of the coil and a flashing test light on the distributor side of the coil. Showing the points are opening and closing.
The breaker plate locates the points and controls their relationship to the distributor cam. You could still get a new one. I have seen them on e-bay.
trucks use a different height cap and rotor. Make certain you have both for a pickup truck.
The ignition coil needs a 12v circuit for starting, and a resistor circuit for running, make sure you don't have 12v all the time or an open resistor wire circuit. Having a "hot coil" makes a bad one out of it.
those are some basic guesses for you.
Otherwise you need to provide something to go on.
Distributors are pretty basic. Replace the points and set them to the right gap. If the distributor doesn't turn when you crank the engine, you have more serious problem such as a broken timing chain.
- Right distributor for an engine? I have a 1978 ford Ranchero with a 351 midland in it and when I had the distributor changed my camshaft gears teeth broke so I got that fixed and then 8 months later with only putting exactly 1,067 miles into it the gears broke again and I'm pretty sure the distributor caused this because it had unusual scrap marks on the teeth so even though I might be wrong what's the right distributor for this type of engine
- Installing distributor blindly? I have a 1975 ford and I wanted to replace the distributor, I took the old one out and bought a new one. I just dropped it in randomly and tried to start the engine. After another 5 tries I got it to start and I set the timing. He car runs great. Is this ok or so I need to have a mechanic reinstall the distributor.
- I replaced the distributor and it is firing on the right, but not on the left any sugg? I had to replace the distributor on my ford truck. Because it was shearing off. Now the truck won't start. We're getting fire on the drivers side, but not the passenger side. Any suggestions as to what we're doing wrong
- How to remove a distributor? I have a 1968 ford f100 pickup. The distributor won't budge even after removing the screw. What is the easiest way to do this?
