Installing distributor blindly?
I have a 1975 ford and I wanted to replace the distributor, I took the old one out and bought a new one. I just dropped it in randomly and tried to start the engine. After another 5 tries I got it to start and I set the timing. He car runs great. Is this ok or so I need to have a mechanic reinstall the distributor.
Idealy one locates #1 spark plug wires position on the distributor cap. Turn engine by hand until #1 piston is on top dead center of compression stroke. Distributor is installed so rotor is pointing at #1 wires corresponding position. Then turning distributor to correct timing using a timing light.
To find Top dead center of #1 cylinder simply remove #1 spark plug. Using a big ratchet turn engine slowly in its correct rotation direction while cover most of spark plug hole with a finger. When one hears pressure escaping by their finger they know both valves are closed and piston is coming up. Compression is this air escaping. Then look at timing indicator and continue turning engine until pointer is exactly at zero. This is Top dead center of compression stroke. (TDC).
Note if it runs you your luck was good! Use a timing light to set timing to specifications and you should be done!
GOOD JOB DUDE!
RETIRED ASE MASTER TECH… RETIRED MEANS OBVIOUSLY OLD SCHOOL KNOWLEDGE!
If it is all set, nothing to check!
With your luck, you need to buy a lotto ticket.
- Right distributor for an engine? I have a 1978 ford Ranchero with a 351 midland in it and when I had the distributor changed my camshaft gears teeth broke so I got that fixed and then 8 months later with only putting exactly 1,067 miles into it the gears broke again and I'm pretty sure the distributor caused this because it had unusual scrap marks on the teeth so even though I might be wrong what's the right distributor for this type of engine
- Installing ac compressor, does it require replacing the dryer too? I removed ac compressor from 2000 ford mustang. Going to replace with new one and take it to jiffy lube for the recharge etc… Do i also need to replace the dryer as well? ALSO, when do i vacuum the system before or after installation?
- Is Installing a solar panel on a van easy? I'm a full time student, this winter I plan on going on a road trip with a van and camping in it. I want to instal a solar panel on the van. The van I'm getting is a 1980s Ford Econoline conversion(really big). Had my eye on this panel from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/...00BFCNFRM/ ^^Comes with an inverter, panel, brackets, wiring, instructions. Have you ever installed one? Is it easy, and how much power will this solar panel give me?
