How to remove a distributor?
I have a 1968 ford f100 pickup. The distributor won't budge even after removing the screw. What is the easiest way to do this?
First off you should set the engine to TDC so you'll be able to replace the distributor back in the proper spot. Make sure to note that the rotor is pointing at the # 1 cylinder on the cap. Then if you removed the bolt and the hold down clamp it should pull right out. Be sure to not turn the engine over while it's out or you'll have to static time the engine to replace it back in the right spot.
Many years ago I had the same problem with a 57 ford distributor and I sprayed it with wd-40 many times and finally ended up using a hammer and chisel on it.
Remove the cap and make a mark where the rotor is pointing so you know where to put it back.
Remove the hold down, and wires or hoses and pull the thing out twisting counterclockwise as you pull.
Its seized, and youll have to get it unstuck. Youll probably end up breaking the distributor and removing it piece by piece. Common on ford. Use never seize on the shoulder of the new one
- Right distributor for an engine? I have a 1978 ford Ranchero with a 351 midland in it and when I had the distributor changed my camshaft gears teeth broke so I got that fixed and then 8 months later with only putting exactly 1,067 miles into it the gears broke again and I'm pretty sure the distributor caused this because it had unusual scrap marks on the teeth so even though I might be wrong what's the right distributor for this type of engine
- Installing distributor blindly? I have a 1975 ford and I wanted to replace the distributor, I took the old one out and bought a new one. I just dropped it in randomly and tried to start the engine. After another 5 tries I got it to start and I set the timing. He car runs great. Is this ok or so I need to have a mechanic reinstall the distributor.
- I replaced the distributor and it is firing on the right, but not on the left any sugg? I had to replace the distributor on my ford truck. Because it was shearing off. Now the truck won't start. We're getting fire on the drivers side, but not the passenger side. Any suggestions as to what we're doing wrong
