If you are going to attempt this type of job, I suggest you buy a full set of tools.

Just about everyone that works on cars has a set of sockets and a set of wrenches. Go to Harbor Freight and get some metric sets.

10 inch crescent wrench

Try a socket or wrench size one at a time and use the one that matches.

C'mon, Skippy… If you're not smart enough to figure that out on your own, you shouldn't be working on a car to begin with.

If your willing to get in there and work on it, you should be able to figure out what you need or you just shouldn't work on it.

These are standard sizes so any socket set will have ones that suit. Most hoods are around 1/2' af ( 13mm if metric) a worksop manual may.state sizes needed but in most cases will assume anybody doing such work has enough savvy to pick right socket or spanner for task needed.
bear in mind if unsure of what we're doing. Get advise or check on U tube etc first. Check any parts under load or stress are supported as sudden release of some components under tension can cause injury.
support for hood for example is often needed and a helper taking weight and assisting is priceless.

Buy a set and find out.

They will become more useful then you can imagine when you have them. I could not imagine my life without tools. Of course I have more skills with them the the average person.

Not an immediate answer - the others are right that you should have a full set of metric sockets and wrenches - but something you need to know.

Before you loosen the bolts for the hood, do something to mark the position of the hinges on the hood. Scribing gently around them with a sharp tool is a classic but it can be done with anything that will give you alignment marks for when you put the hood back on. It will save you a *lot* of frustration. Also, have at least two helpers for handling the hood, both taking it off and putting it back on.

You need a socket that fits the nut or bolt.
A socket set will have an assortment of sizes.

  • Socket size to remove starter? I have a 2004 Ford ranger 2 wheel drive with a 3.0 6 cylinder. I was able to get the 2 mounting bolts on the bottom with a 13 mm. However the socket set I have only goes to 14 mm. What size do I need to have to get the last bolt located on top near the solenoid?
  • Would a 2013 ford fusion be good to take up PA mountains? I have a 4 cyl 2013 ford fusion that I just bought, and we take a trip once a year to PA and my mother would like to take my car this time around. I've only ever taken 6-8 cyls through there and am worried I might not be able to make it up the mountains with 4 people and luggage to boot.
  • What should I buy and why? 2013 ford fusion it 2013 civic coupe? I like the sporty edge of Both the coupe and fusion, but they're very different cars. I'm a male. Want gas mileage
  • How do you remove a 2011 ford fusion grill bar? I need to replace one of the 3 chrome bars of the grill. How do you do this? It looks like they are just snapped in place, so do I just pry it out?
