Socket size to remove starter?

I have a 2004 Ford ranger 2 wheel drive with a 3.0 6 cylinder. I was able to get the 2 mounting bolts on the bottom with a 13 mm. However the socket set I have only goes to 14 mm. What size do I need to have to get the last bolt located on top near the solenoid?

All of the Starter bolts should have been the same size. If 14mm is too small it must be 15mm or 5/8in. Try a Spark Plug socket, they're 5/8.

Might I suggest that if you are doing your own automotive repairs you should have at least two full sets of sockets, metric and SAE? Extension bars, too.

For my purposes I find that much stuff around my farm requires 1/2 inch and 9/16, and that I'm best to own about a dozen of each in open-end/box combination. Extra 1/2 and 9/16 sockets are good to have, too, along with the knowledge that a 3/4 and a 19mm are almost exactly the same size.

  • Aren't you amazed by the capabilities and the size of today's full-size pickup trucks? I drive a 2011 Ford Ranger XLT 4x2 with a 4.0 liter V6 (~245 ci.) engine. I was looking up the specs for early-mid 1960s F100s (considered full-size), and they have nearly the same GVWR, towing capacity, payload, horsepower, wheelbase, and height as my "compact" truck. In your opinion, do you think today's full-size trucks are amazing or too fancy/over-sized (a traditionalist like me)? P.S.: I like all American vehicles
  • My low beam socket is like stuck? I have 2015 Ford Escape, I went to change my low beams because my LED light was out. Well I take my bulb out but the socket that's attached to the car is like stuck? I don't know if it's stuck or if it just fell like came apart? But I need to replace my low beam! Help?! I can't fit my hand in there to grab it
  • Headlight socket wire is wrapped around something? I went to change my low beams 2015 Ford Escape, the connecter that's attactched to the car with the wires (not sure of the proper term) seems to be wrapped around something. I finally was able to grab the socket and pull it out but it's not enough to where I can attach my bulb into it. It's too short. So I'm thinking the wire got wrapped around something like got pushed down somehow. How can I fix this?
  • Can a car have a starter relay and starter solenoid? I have a 1972 Ford thunderbird and I feel like it may have a starter relay as well as a starter solenoid. On the starter motor there's a starter solenoid. I know that for sure. On the fender of the car appears to have something that resembles a starter relay. I've heard some people tell me that they can't have both but is it possible that it could be that?
