Does misaligned serpentine belt cause it to slip off?

I have a 2007 ford fusion 2.3L with 90, xxx miles. About a year and a half ago I had the belt changed because I had a leaky axle that was slinging greass all over it causing it to squeak and it's was the original belt so I guess it was time for a new one anyway. Everything was fine up until about 6 months ago, I had a idler pulley that was in bad shape causing excessive noise replaced by a friend that works on cars and we just reused the same belt since it's fairly new. All was fine until a month or so later I began to get another squeak and I had no idea what is, not bad just on start up but after awhile of driving it goes away, I read online I may just be a misaligned belt so Ignored it for the past 4 months and this morning I get into my car start it and a hear a wword noise immediately after I turned the key and my battery light came on and lose of power steering, pop the hood and belt is off all the pulleys. Strange how traveling over 70+MPhil daily going 100 miles away for months nothing happens and simple start up takes the belt off. Any ideas on if I should get a new belt? Or does tightening pulleys make a difference? Does misaligned serpentine belt cause it to slip off - 1

Read these two posts. Sure sounds like a bad tensioner to me

I would guess the tensioner is bad.

Spin all the pulleys that the belt goes on to find out if one of them is bad. It will feel gritty or dry and may actually flop if you try to wiggle it in and out. Did You ever take care of the grease leak on the axle?

  • How to put on a serpentine belt on a 99 ford contour with a 2.0l vct engine? My serpentine belt snapped so I went to advanced auto parts and bought a new belt. I have looked at the belt diagram on my car and it does not match my pulley system so I tried to put the belt through the pulleys and there's a lot of extra slack at the bottom can anyway give me the correct diagram or help me out?
  • New serpentine belt squeals? My dad replaced the serpentine belt on my car (07 Ford Fusion SEL) last weekend when I was home. I noticed my car makes grinding noises when I reverse it and a squealing/peeping noise when I turn now. Should I take it in and have a mechanic look at it? My car has never made that noise before, so it has to be from the new belt.
  • How long will this serpentine belt last? Its on a 2010 ford fusion. There's a big rip in it there's about 1/4 inch width left in one spot. How long will it last before breaking? I need to go 3 miles
  • 2001 Ford Taurus 3.0L SES flex fuel a/c bypassed by serpentine belt? I got a diagram from my mechanic in town for bypassing a/c pulley with a shorter serpentine belt but the back of the belt seems to be rubbing just slightly on the a/c pulley as it goes around. Is there any way of getting to the a/c pulley to remove it from the bottom of the car instead of having to remove all of the pulleys?
