Acceleration: 4 cylinder vs V6?

Could you please tell me if there are any 4 cylinder cars that have acceleration that is equivalent to that of a 3.8 V6? Both off the line and on the highway?

I want to buy a newer (2014-2016) but most are only available with 4 cylinders.

Until 2 years ago, I only drove V6's, then I bought a Ford Fusion with a 4 cylinder engine and the lack of pep is driving me absolutely bonkers!

I would like a mid to full size, 4 door sedan, that has a very solid/heavy feel to it. I don't care about communications options, back up camera, navigation or leather. But would like remote start, sunroof and a nice-sounding stereo system. I don't want to spend over $25,000. Any suggestions?

Don't be fooled by engine size, there are many 4 cylinder cars that will out perform a V6. There are even one or two three pot engines that can.

If you're talking American cars, US based manufacturers have always had a talent for squeezing surprisingly little power out of surprisingly large engines.

If you want the pep from a 4 cly engine you either need a lighter car or a turbocharger (or both) Subaru WRX, Ford Focus ST etc. They are seriously (V8) fast.

Mid size car? Buy a higher spec Accord or Camry with a V6. Economy isn't too bad with the fuel infection and modern gearbox giving tall open road gearing. Yes you will probably get all the options, because it's not the base 4cly model.

PS, I HATE sunroofs. They always leak eventually.

Being a 4 in line or V6 or V8 does not determine performance of the vehicle.

Which 3.8L V6 are you referring to? GM, Ford, and Chrysler have all made V6 engines with a displacement of 3.8L

The other thing to keep in mind is that performance is not only determined by the engine power output but also vehicle weight, gearing, aerodynamics, etc. A Dodge minivan with their 3.8L V6 wasn't exactly setting the land speed records for example. It took over 9.5 seconds to reach 0-60. A lot of 4-cylinder cars can easily beat that.

Try a turbo four. They produce much more power than a std 4 cyl engine.

4-cyl Toyota

Just do the research, every car has it's performance specks on the internet somewhere, 0-60 times, ft lbs of torque, engine HP, also what type of transmission, manual, multigear automatics (some up to 8 speed), car weight, Also a turbo is not necessarily the best option, superchargers out perform turbo's because they run all the time don't need the car running hard to work.

Practically any 4 cylinder car with a turbocharger can put out V6 levels of power.

Turbo. If you want something fast, try a Subaru Impreza WRX. For something more practical, A Subaru Legacy might work. Downside would be unless you get a manual I think all new Subarus come with their CVT transmission. No gears means the feel of how the car moves is… Different… From what you're probably used to. But manuals are not hard to learn or drive.

What you need to look at is torque, not just displacement, as well as final drive ratio and weight.

  • Which cylinder is cylinder #5? I posted this the other day but in a hurry with not much detail so here it is again I drive a 2004 Ford taurus with a v6 24v DOHC Duartec engine and my computer is reading a bad ignition coil on (coil e #5) replacing it won't. Be difficult I'm just not sure how to determine which cylinder is which
  • What car is cheap and can be modified to be really fast in speed and acceleration? I have a Ford Taurus and I feel like as if it lacks speed and acceleration. Also which modifications can increase the speed of the car and acceleration of it without removing any weight?
  • How to increase the speed and acceleration of my car? I have a 2001 Ford Taurus V6 3.0L. What modifications can I make, if any, to increase speed and acceleration. Also what kind of tires are better for cities in hot areas such as Phoenix, Az that don't slide easily when braking?
  • 2002 ford Taurus cuts off a few secs after acceleration? OK my Taurus cranks and starts but she's shaking and sputtering like she's struggling to stay alive. When I press on the gas she dies. I have no problem cranking her back up. What's wrong with my baby?
