Ford Focus doesn't start up right away?
When I go to turn on my 2006 zx5, it cranks 2-3 times first and then it starts up normally. I already replaced the fuel filter, what else can be the issue? Also, when the car turns on it sounds like i'm accelerating the gas pedal and the rpm gauge goes up to in between 2-3 and Slowly sets back down to one. Do some cars do that or is it another issue?
The MAF needs cleaning by the sounds of it. Be very careful as it is very easy to damage it when cleaning it.
It sounds like an issue with the Idle Air control valve or IAC or sticking throttle plate and possibly multiple issues with a vacuum leak or low fuel pressure.
The computer uses the IAC to regulate airflow around the throttle plate in order to set the idle speed… The IAC has a plunger tip that moves in and out of it's bore in the TB based on voltage applied by the computer to regulate air flow around the throttle plate… Only at idle. If the IAC is malfunctioning or has soot clogged it's tip and passage, it can cause hard starting, stalling or high idle speeds. The Throttle body throttle plate could also be gummed up with soot/carbon deposits and sticking partially open which can affect starting or idle speeds… Remove any air intake ducts and clean the TB plate area with specific TB spray cleaner… Sold at parts stores… And wipe off residue with soft clean towel.
In most cases, you can unplug, remove the IAC and clean the IAC plunger tip and the bore it sits in with Throttle Body spray cleaner… Sold at parts stores… And reinstall… That may also solve the hard start/high idle issues.

You might also check for vacuum leaks which can cause hard starting and high idle speeds… Check all vacuum hoses for cracks or splits, loose, etc. And spray carb cleaner around any mating areas of the TB and intake or intake to cylinder head with the engine running… If there's a vacuum leak in those areas, the spray will temporarily seal the leak and cause engine revs to alter… Then repair/replace the leaking gasket.
Lastly, low fuel pressure from a weak pump, bad pressure regulator or clogged filter, etc. Can also cause hard starts… Check the fuel pressure at the engine fuel rail test port with a pressure tester if the other items above do not solve the issue… Sold or rented at parts stores.
And replace fuel filter if needed… Run some Seafoam or Techron in the fuel tank per label directions to also clean fuel injectors at least once a year.
- 1995 Ford Taurus with a steering issue. When I turn the steering wheel to a certain spot left or right it will start moving back and forth? According to previous owner the rack and pinion was previously replaced. Steering wheel Is off a little to the right. Any ideas?
- My 1996 ford ranger will not start right away after filling up with gas? I turn the key and the starter just keeps trying to catch but engine never does. I've replaced the fuel filter, fuel lines and sensor in the fuel tank. Spark plugs and wires, alternator, timing belt, starter and battery are all less than a year old. I don't let the gas tank get below a quarter of a tank.
- I have a 97 Ford Ranger, 4.0, in good shape, 102,000 miles and it doesn't start as well as I think it should. It cranks strong, and has new? Motorcraft plugs and fuel filter. I've cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body and the truck runs fine and there's no misfire. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I think the truck should start when I turn the key instead of having to crank 2-3 times. I've also installed a new IAC valve. Any suggestions on how to get the truck to start better?
- 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 4x44x4 lights popup on dash right before I start it. Turn selector knob and absolutely nothing happens? 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 4x4 4x4 lights popup on dash right before I start it. Turn selector knob and absolutely nothing happens? When I turn the 4x4 selector knob nothing happens I'm pointing out that the light comes on before it starts because its not the actual 4x4 module thats the issue like everyone assumes from he start.
