Clunking noise when changing gear, and at idle when depressing the clutch pedal, what is the reason?

I have a 2006 mk2 Ford Focus Sport 1.8 TDCI

I notice that when changing gears I hear a clunking noise, Also when I'm at an idle and I depress the clutch I hear a clunk noise too.

My car goes into every gear superbly with no problem whatsoever, but the noise is annoying and worrying.

I also get a light come on and then go off occasionally and been told it is the gearbox like although my car is a manual

It does not make any noise in gear 4 or 5, only 1,2,3,

Benn told that it is more likely the gearbox than clutch release bearing because it doesn't make the noise in all gears. Also was told that changing the gearbox oil may eliminate the clunk noise.

any ideas?

You have a bearing or two in the transmission that is damaged. Likely the cluster (counter shaft) gear bearings. The higher the gear they less torque is multiplied and therefore less load on bearings. When one bearing goes they all do because of debris in the oil.
Sounds like you need to visit a transmission shop for proper diagnosis and a quote!

Release bearing?

  • Help truck isn't going into gear and when I let the clutch out it does? I have a 2001 standard Ford ranger. I barely had a new clutch put in last year. But anyway I was going down highway in 5th gear and as I was going to put it in neutral it made a loud popping noise and then died. So I went to the side of the road and tried starting it, nothing. It starts up fine but the minute I let off the clutch it dies and when I try to shift it into 1 3 or 5 it feels like some thing is blocking it it'll act like it goes into 2 an 3 but it doesn't engage.
  • 96 Ford Ranger clutch pedal? From time to time when I get into truck the clutch pedal won't go down. It hasn't happened while driving. After a little time it's back to normal. The truck did sit for a year, could this have anything to do with it? I'm not sure if I should be driving the truck or not. Insight please.
  • I bought an Actron CP9125 Code Reader to try and diagnose a rough idle at cold start on a 98 Ford 4.0 engine. The rough idle had not caused? The CEL to come on. I plugged the code reader in with just the key on and pressed read and the little asterisk goes half-way across the screen one time and stops. I press the read button again and it reads 0 codes. I was thinking it would scan multiple times to check for pending codes or other issues. I tried it with the engine running and the same thing happens. Is this code reader operating properly?
  • Ford Focus 1.8 TDDI was popping out of 5th gear now won't go into any gear! Is it Clutch or Gearbox? The car which is a 2002 was jumping out of 5th gear into neutral when travelling at 60mph. Now it won't go into any gear and I can only start the car with the clutch pedal pressed in and when I release the clutch pedal with the gear stick in neutral the car stalls. The gear stick will literally not go into any gear. I think I need to find a used gearbox and I think the clutch is fine. What do you think?
