Help truck isn't going into gear and when I let the clutch out it does?

I have a 2001 standard Ford ranger. I barely had a new clutch put in last year. But anyway I was going down highway in 5th gear and as I was going to put it in neutral it made a loud popping noise and then died. So I went to the side of the road and tried starting it, nothing. It starts up fine but the minute I let off the clutch it dies and when I try to shift it into 1 3 or 5 it feels like some thing is blocking it it'll act like it goes into 2 an 3 but it doesn't engage.

It is likely the transmission has seized. When was the last time the gear oil was serviced? Get it towed to a mechanic and get the transmission looked at.

Time to buy a new car.

It's broken

I would like to think the concentric slave cylinder (CSC, a common trouble point in Rangers) was replaced when the clutch was. That is not likely the problem but it is a concern.

In any case, it is time to tow it to a transmission specialist. I'm pretty sure Anonymous is right - something is awry in the gearbox.

You have transmission trouble my friend. It sounds like you have more than one gear engaged at the same time. If the vehicle starts with the clutch depressed (pedal pushed to the floor) but the engine dies when you let the clutch pedal up, the transmission is locked and must be repaired.

Your transmission went to crunched parts or the rear differential, one of the two. Pull the driveshaft off and check the gear box and rear differential for lockup. Your description is most likely the rear differential pinon gear bearing, only a hands and eyes on inspection can tell the truth.

Could be a broken transmission shaft. Open up the pan and see what falls out.
