Water pump problem with my 89 f150?

I have an 89 ford f150. I'm not sure if my water pump is completely broken or just has a small leak. When I pour water into the cap it goes down the hose and into the pump and all of it just leaks out. Is the pump broken and need replaced or is it just a hole that I can seal with some sealant from the store? If it is broken what does a water pump typically cost?

The pump is no longer usable. Purchase a new one and while at the store ask if there are any special tools needed to remove or install the pump. You should also replace the thermostat and the gaskets and hoses and the pressure cap on the radiator. To get the price on a water pump you will need to go to the local auto parts store and ask them. You also need some coolant. You also will need to know the size of your engine and if you have AC or special alternator. To R&R the unit for a beginner is an all day job, for an experienced mechanic at the dealer it's about 2 hours and that includes a coffee break.

  • How to change water pump on 1993 Ford Tempo? I managed to get the drive belt off but I can't seem to get the tube that goes into the water pump off. It seems to be made of metal or something. I also can't seem to reach the 3 bolts that hold the water pump on, they seem to be in places to tight to reach. Any suggestions?
