How to realign a misaligned a/c compressor pulley?
I have a 1992 Ford F-150 with a 4.9 Liter in it and lately I have been having some belt issues. I figured out the cause was a misaligned pulley for the a/c compressor. I've checked a bunch of websites and forums and can't seem to find anything on how to do this or if it is even possible. Can someone just give me a brief run down on what I should do or steer me in the right direction?
Oh Boy, I never heard of that either. My first thought was that it's the wrong or damaged compressor. I can't visualize shimming the compressor to align it. So the only thing left is to shim or modify the MOUNTING BRACKET to align it. Or maybe the mounting bracket is damaged.
If the pulley isn't in line with the rest, and you didn't remove the compressor for any reason, then more than likely the clutch bearing is shot on the compressor. It will cause an uneven rotation and sometimes a slight skew of the pulley. It's a simple fix with basic tools, the only thing needed is a clamp style oil filter wrench to hold the plate while removing and mounting the pulley.
You should first ensure that the bracket hasn't moved and also that the compressor is properly mounted to the bracket and hasn't shifted.
You should join f150forum.com, I'm a member there (have a 94 5.8) and have learned more from the members there than I could have ever hoped. I followed a write up when I replaced my compressor clutch bearing and was done in less than an hour.
- If my power steering pump and pulley break, is there any other parts I may have to potentially replace? Last night when I was driving, my power steering pump busted and also broke my power steering pulley. I have a 2002 ford Taurus. In the process of the pulley breaking off, the serpentine belt came off. It is still on the car so I just have to re position it once the new pulley is on. My question is through this incident, could anything else have broken? I just did a bypass pulley for the AC compressor last week. And I also replaced the serpentine belt last week.
- I think there's a leak near my a/c compressor in my car? My ac in my ford taurus stopped cooling for a second and i saw smoke or steam from under the hood by the compressor. I smelled a plastic-ish smell through the vents. When i shut the car off, i hear the sound of air leaking from somewhere maybe? It cooled back off when i started the car again. Just not as cool as it should for being a compressor barely a year old.
- Do i need a pulley puller to remove my water pump pulley? I have a 1996 ford ranger v6 4.0 liter and i was wondering if i need a pulley puller to remove it and/or what other tools will i be needing. It doesn't seem too hard and it's right there so i think i'm capable. I replaced the serpentine belt but now i need to replace both. Also if anyone would be able to give me a link to a video or kind of give me the gist of replacing the pulley.
- Installing ac compressor, does it require replacing the dryer too? I removed ac compressor from 2000 ford mustang. Going to replace with new one and take it to jiffy lube for the recharge etc… Do i also need to replace the dryer as well? ALSO, when do i vacuum the system before or after installation?
