I think there's a leak near my a/c compressor in my car?

My ac in my ford taurus stopped cooling for a second and i saw smoke or steam from under the hood by the compressor. I smelled a plastic-ish smell through the vents. When i shut the car off, i hear the sound of air leaking from somewhere maybe? It cooled back off when i started the car again. Just not as cool as it should for being a compressor barely a year old.

Yep definitely a leak. I had an old 91 240sx that would randomly "purge" freon like that. The leak could be either a bad o-ring within the a/c lines themselves, or it could be a faulty pressure switch which let the system build up too much pressure thus causing an o-ring to blow, not sure. I agree it's best to just let an a/c shop handle it, I've wasted a lot of time trying to diagnose and fix a/c problems and wound up costing myself the price of a professional repair multiple times.

Bring it in.

And improperly serviced A/C system can be just as bad… Maybe worse… Than one that doesn't work. Too much refrigerant and you run the risk of blowing your compressor. Not enough and the system doesn't run at peak efficiency… If at all.

Simply connecting some A/C gauges to your system can tell an experienced tech a lot about the health of your cars AC system. A full diagnostic runs about $100-125.

Take it in and have it looked at.
