1997 ford f150 xlt extended factory radio system?

My husband has a 1997 ford f150 xlt extended cab and I'm wanting to upgrade the factory stereo system for a surprise
but I'm clueless on what to buy?
i.e.
are the rear and front speakers same size?
I believe the radio is a double den but not absolutely sure? I like the "in dash video receivers"
would it be wise to buy new speaker wire as well?
we're middle aged I'm not looking to recapture our youth in a tricked out system in these things but we like to hear the music so i'd appreciate any recommendation on the system receiver and speakers.
thanks 1997 ford f150 xlt extended factory radio system - 1

Look up your husband's Ford truck on crutchfield.com. You will see all available stereo units that will properly fit and work well on a F150 xlt extended cab

The front and rear speakers are the same size: 6x8". Technically, you can fit a double-DIN head unit into your truck, but it would require you to modify the radio cavity (remove a support bracket, and do some cutting). A single-DIN will fit using a mounting kit without the need for modifying the dash opening. If you're just installing a new head unit and replacing the speakers, there's no need for new speaker wire--the factory wiring will work perfectly well.
