Why does my serpentine belt fall off sometimes?

I have a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 with over 200k miles so I know she's not a spring chicken. Sometimes the serpentine belt slips off the pulleys (it's happened 3 times in the past year) and it has always been after driving in a downpour or through a puddle. I avoid puddles when possible, but I have hit a few and drove in heavy rain & the belt doesn't always slip off, just sometimes. One time it had to be replaced because of missing teeth, but the past 2 times the belt looked new. I have the correct belt, we triple checked. I was wondering if anyone knows anything I can try to avoid belt slippage because it is a pain in the *** waiting to be rescued when it happens.

You need a new belt tensioner immediately, your current one obviously is not doing it's job if your belt is slipping off, I'd buy a new belt as we'll seeing how old worn serpentine belts sometimes tend to strech, also when you remove the old belt clean all pullies of oil or any lubricant

Check your belt tensioner.

While on pop the hood and check the belt of play.
See if the belt moves out of place and also check the belt tensioner if it moves too much. (it shouldn't)

Most likely the belt tensioner has worn bearings. You'll find that out when the belt slips off again. See if the pulley is sloppy or loose. It's also possible that you have a bad bearing on another smooth surface pulley. Smooth surface pulleys don't have anything that keeps the belt on the pulley. They rely on the grooved pulleys to keep the belt aligned.

That's a very serious situation. Recommend you have it corrected immediately or risk really expensive repairs.

The belt tensioner is weak, a pulley is bent, oil on the belt! Any of those things can cause the belt to slip off!

  • How to put on a serpentine belt on a 99 ford contour with a 2.0l vct engine? My serpentine belt snapped so I went to advanced auto parts and bought a new belt. I have looked at the belt diagram on my car and it does not match my pulley system so I tried to put the belt through the pulleys and there's a lot of extra slack at the bottom can anyway give me the correct diagram or help me out?
  • New serpentine belt squeals? My dad replaced the serpentine belt on my car (07 Ford Fusion SEL) last weekend when I was home. I noticed my car makes grinding noises when I reverse it and a squealing/peeping noise when I turn now. Should I take it in and have a mechanic look at it? My car has never made that noise before, so it has to be from the new belt.
  • How long will this serpentine belt last? Its on a 2010 ford fusion. There's a big rip in it there's about 1/4 inch width left in one spot. How long will it last before breaking? I need to go 3 miles
  • 2001 Ford Taurus 3.0L SES flex fuel a/c bypassed by serpentine belt? I got a diagram from my mechanic in town for bypassing a/c pulley with a shorter serpentine belt but the back of the belt seems to be rubbing just slightly on the a/c pulley as it goes around. Is there any way of getting to the a/c pulley to remove it from the bottom of the car instead of having to remove all of the pulleys?
