Gas gauge not working and car acting up?

My car ran out of gas because my gauge said I had a quarter of a tank when obviously I didn't (grrr!)
Anyways I put about 3 gallons of gas in my tank and when I start my car, it's idling extremely low and when I go under 15 or 10 mph it dies. Once I get going steady (25-45mph) it's fine.
Is this normal for a car that has been run out of gas? What could be wrong? Maybe I picked up the trash thats in the bottom of the tank? Help? Anyone? Suggestions?

(1999 Ford Escort SE)

Running out of gas can damage the in-tank fuel pump. Do a pressure and volume test on the pump and change the fuel filter.

This most definitely sounds like a clogged filter, or a weak pump, or both. New fuel pumps are cooled by fuel. When you run your car under 1/4 tank you can overheat and ruin these pumps. It also makes it easier to plug a filter with crud at the bottom of the tank. I would recommend this be a job for a technician if you are not mechanically inclined. There are fuel pressure tests and voltage drop tests and other tests than can be done by a professional.

  • Rpm gauge not working normally? I have a 2004 Ford Freestyle and I noticed today my RPM gauge has been acting funny. When I turn the car on, rather sitting just above 0 it is sitting at one. When I start to accelerate it would normally go up to a 2 but instead it is going to almost 3. It is an older car with 150k miles on it. I'm not car savy in any way but I want to know what could possibly cause this and if it will be an expensive fix or not.
  • My gas gauge isn't working right? 2001 ford ranger 3.0 manual 2wd. My gas gauge is fluctuating but it doesn't really correlate to how much gas is in my tank. I'd say that it goes between 1/4 and 5/8 most of the time. What should i check? How do i check it? Is there anyway i can read the voltage on the sending unit to see if its good? I'm out of ideas
  • Gas gauge issues 2001 ford ranger 2wd manual 3.0 engine. 12 gallon gas tank? The gas gauge fluctuates between 3/8 and 7/8 somewhat correlating to the amount of gas in my tank but it isn't accurate. What can i do to try and fix this problem? I'm hoping it isn't the float in the gas tank and would like to cover everything else before i drop my gas tank. additional information will be added as requested Gas gauge problems? 2001 ford ranger with a 3.0 engine manual transmission and a 12 gallon gas tank
