89 Ford Ranger gas gauge is stuck?
I haven't actually made a serious effort to fix the problem, but when I do where would be a good place to start?
Probably the first place to start is to find out if its the gauge or the sending unit. Since yours is an '89 model it could be either. Using a meter, test to see if there's any current getting to the gauge, if not it'll be either the sending unit or an open or a short in the wiring. Test the wiring between the gauge and the tank for a wiring issue. If neither of those isolates a problem its time to replace the sending unit. You have two ways to do that, far easier than dropping the tank is to remove the 6 Tork bolts, the tail light wiring connector and the filler hose from the bed and lift it… Or drop the tank. From experience I can tell you my wife and I lifted the bed on mine with no problems at all. It doesn't have to come completely off, you just need to move it back and raise the front enough to get to the top of the tank.
The float in the tank is stuck. The float is in the fuel pump. The only fix is to drop the tank, remove and replace the fuel pump.In my F-150 it is an expensive fix, quoted $600.00 estimated.
I have two tanks the rear tank is fine, the front tank has the problem.
I just live with it. Not worth spending that much money on a 20 year old truck.Possibly your vehicle is easier to fix? I tried STP and even tapped on the tank with a wrench where I thought the float was. No luck
A few years ago my gas gauge experienced a similar problem, it was caused from gas being stolen.
A qualified mechanic should be able to fix the gas gauge.
As long as its stuck on full you will never run out of gas.
- My gas gauge isn't working right? 2001 ford ranger 3.0 manual 2wd. My gas gauge is fluctuating but it doesn't really correlate to how much gas is in my tank. I'd say that it goes between 1/4 and 5/8 most of the time. What should i check? How do i check it? Is there anyway i can read the voltage on the sending unit to see if its good? I'm out of ideas
- Is this normal or is my ford ranger fuel gauge stuck/broken? I recently purchased a 2007 ford ranger, and i do not know much of how its fuel gauge works yet. I filled it up for the first time a couple days ago and drove it about 35 miles since, and the fuel gauge still shows full. The gauge shows empty when i turn off the truck and then upon starting it up returns tot he full position like normal. Is this normal for ford rangers, or otherwise what could be wrong? Also what would be the range on a full tank for this type of truck?
- I was getting gas in my 94 ford ranger EXTCAB and gas was pouring out under truck? How do I see if its the fuel neck? I used a tiny auto camera to stick all the way down the gas neck and didn't see any holes
- I have a 1994 ford ranger and my tempature gauge is constintly going up and down? When I drive the temperature gauge will rise up above the half way point and then it will go down Almost all the way and will just keep doing that until I turn off the truck. Anyone know what could be the cause of this?
