I have a 2002 ford escape and it shut off on me while I was driving, and it won't turn back on?

The car is a 2002 ford escape with a 4 cylinder 2.0 liter engine. Its also a manual. I've already changed the spark plugs and the power coil, but still nothing.

Call the dealership.

It could be the processor or the fuel pump.

Could be the battery or the alternator. Have someone help you jump start the car and then disconnect the positive side of the battery while the car is running. If the car shuts off right away then it's the alternator.

Try taking the air filter out and spraying a blast of starting fluid into the throttle body and then try starting the motor. If it starts for a few seconds you need a fuel pump

Have we checked if fuel pump runs when we turn ignition on? Ought to run for a few seconds to pressurise system. If not? Then pump or supply or fuse has failed.
if we have pump running? Then check for spark. No spark can be from many areas. Here a diagnostic check is best.

Thebax2006 suggestion to use the starting fluid method is indeed the first step you should take. If it starts with the fluid, youve got a No Fuel condition. If it doesn't start, youve got a No Spark condition. If its a No Fuel issue, the first place to look is the fuel pump inertia switch, which is normally located in the rear hatch area.Hitting a pothole too hard is enough to trip the switch, which kills power to the fuel pump.Pressing the reset button will close the contacts again, allowing the pump to work again. You should also have a fuse and/or fuel pump relay in the vehicle. If either is bad, they will cause the fuel pump to shut off. If your engine has a fuel pressure regulator, turn the key on/engine off, remove the vacuum hose from the regulator and check the inside of it for fuel and make sure the regulator port doesn't have fuel seeping out of it. If either is present, the regulator is bad.
If your issue is No Spark, post your results and those checks will be listed.

Junk it and cut your losses.

Mechanic job

This happened in my car once and it was literally a piece of trash that fell inside my steering column and got into my starter. Mechanic charged me nothing

May sound silly, but check the brake fluid reservoir or the fluid level sensor

A lot of new cars monitor this level and if it gets too low will shut off the engine (even when you are driving) and won't restart until it senses fluid in it

(I assume the theory is - if you aint got any brake fluid then the brakes are likely to fail (or will fail).so its better to stop the engine now rather than they fail later and you can't stop)

try pumping the brake pedal a few times THEN try to start

Don't know if a 2002 ford escape has this sensor and stops if there aint any fluid in the reservoir, so you could try asking ford themselves or the dealer workshop[ if it does
