Ford Escape serpentine belt?
I have a 2003 Ford Escape. The power steering went out and the car kept dying which I assumed was the battery, and then it just wouldn't do anything. The air conditioning also stopped working, if that's relevant to the belt. A friend lifted the hood and discovered the serpentine belt was completely melted and frayed. What is the worst case scenario on how much all of this would cost? I know it probably damaged other things.
The question for you is what caused the serpentine belt to melt and fray. There's a very good possibility that your failed A/C compressor caused it to do so. If that is the case the compressor as well as the belt would need to be replace. A/C compressors do not come cheap.
Well, the serpentine belt is needed to operate the power steering, AND make the AC work, AND turn the alternator so the battery gets charged, AND turn the power steering pump so it will work!
You possibly have one of those items, or an idler pulley that is bad, or it could be all you need is a new belt. Without a visual inspection, there's no way anyone here can give a reasonable "how much" answer. If all that is needed is the belt, less than $100.00 should fix all your trouble.
The serpentine belt powers everything. It powers the alternator, and that is why your battery died. The most probable scenario is that you replace the serpentine belt, get a jump start to start the car, and everything works normally and nothing is damaged.
- How to put on a serpentine belt on a 99 ford contour with a 2.0l vct engine? My serpentine belt snapped so I went to advanced auto parts and bought a new belt. I have looked at the belt diagram on my car and it does not match my pulley system so I tried to put the belt through the pulleys and there's a lot of extra slack at the bottom can anyway give me the correct diagram or help me out?
- New serpentine belt squeals? My dad replaced the serpentine belt on my car (07 Ford Fusion SEL) last weekend when I was home. I noticed my car makes grinding noises when I reverse it and a squealing/peeping noise when I turn now. Should I take it in and have a mechanic look at it? My car has never made that noise before, so it has to be from the new belt.
- How long will this serpentine belt last? Its on a 2010 ford fusion. There's a big rip in it there's about 1/4 inch width left in one spot. How long will it last before breaking? I need to go 3 miles
- 2001 Ford Taurus 3.0L SES flex fuel a/c bypassed by serpentine belt? I got a diagram from my mechanic in town for bypassing a/c pulley with a shorter serpentine belt but the back of the belt seems to be rubbing just slightly on the a/c pulley as it goes around. Is there any way of getting to the a/c pulley to remove it from the bottom of the car instead of having to remove all of the pulleys?
