Can my Ford Escape tow a pontoon?

My wife and I just bought a 2015 Ford Escape. It's the SE model. Has the 2.5L l4 engine. Automatic six speed with select shift. I'm looking to buy an aftermarket towing package for it. Some I seen online that was rated to tow 3500lbs with 525 tongue weight I believe.

My question is can this SUV pull a pontoon? Can it haul that sucker out of the water when leaving the lake? I know it doesn't have a lot of horsepower. But can it do it? I'm thinking of buying a 20' pontoon boat. Anyone else done this with this car before?

PRETTY SMALL, … I would say " NO " would be a safe bet… Also, besides pulling it up out of the launch area, you got to be able to control And STOP it on the road,… It don't natter what the hitch is rated,… You got to have the vehicle to handle it. Better look for a bigger toe vehicle

Why don't you ask at the dealer or a boat marina dealer? Asking here going to make you feel any better when the boat's laying on the side of the road?! The place installing the tow package should also know what they are doing! Make sure the hitch is a Type III.

As long as you stay under the 3500 pound towing weight you're okay. The problem you could face is the launch ramps. Quite often the ramps are slippery and that's where you could have a problem.

  • Why can't powerful cars tow like trucks can? I don't know if this a dumb question, but I don't understand why you can't, I know you aren't supposed to but why. If my 230 hp Ford Ranger can tow 6000lbs, why can't the 845 hp dodge demon tow something, it has way more hp, way more torque and 2 more cylinders. Does it have something to do with the suspension not being able to hold the weight or what?
