$500 truck with 250,000 miles. Is it worth it?
I was looking at used pick-up trucks online and I found a $500 Ford F250 XL with about 243,000 miles. I love the price of it, but with that amount of miles, is it even worth the buy? There have been no accidents, or recalls or anything. There seems to be a bit of rust, but I don't care much about that. Any suggestions? I d hate to see it stop working after only a few weeks of usage.
Save your money. With that many miles on it everything on it may need to be replaced. It could be a money pit…
If you want to have a mechanic do a complete inspection - as you should with any vehicle you want to buy - then go ahead… The $ 100 or so for the diagnosis can be considered as "cheap insurance" - you will know if the mechanical components are going to last or not
For $500 you can drive it until it quits and then sell it to a junk yard. Around here they pay 4 or 5 hundred dollars for junk cars.
$500 is certainly a good price, assuming it runs. However, with such high mileage you may end up spending much more money just to keep it running. You might get a year or two, or a week or two. So you have to consider the $500 as a bet that you might win, or lose.
For $500, you can't expect too much. The scrap value is almost that high.
For a beater truck the price is decent. If you are comfortable with getting a beater truck, go for it provided an inspection by a mechanic doesn't reveal any major problems. Certain minor old car problems like a bit of oil consumption is tolerable. Even if it does need to be parted out, the used parts on it are still worth something and you should be able to break even by selling parts.
If it runs, its probably worth it.
If you get a month or two out of it, that's all you can hope for.
For $500, accidents, or recalls shouldn't even be on your radar.
Walk away. It will pack up inside 3 months. If it lasts that long.
- Is it worth it to buy a ford ranger with 387,000 miles? My neighbor is selling his 1999 ford ranger 5 speed manual for 5300$. I think it's a decent truck for its Age besides a few dents and scrapes it runs and looks fine, and it has high mileage but it has a good engine and transmiton from what he tells me. However is it worth what he wants for it
- How much is a 2000 ford ranger with 170,000 miles and 3 inch body lift worth? It is a stepside, extended cab. It has a few probs… Window on drivers side doesn't work… Electric windows… And the tires are kinda bald… It also has a slight oil leak somewhere… It always leaves little dots of oil when it is parked. It does burn any oil at all though. What would it be worth you think?
- Will a Ford Focus with 116K miles on it do a road trip from the UK to Germany? (2,500 miles)? It's got 116K on the clock, had a new Cambelt 3 months ago, four new tires two weeks ago and drives great, was serviced at the same time as getting the tires done but would it do the road trip? Going over 5 days. Please only answer if you know about cars, I'm not looking for uneducated opinions in the nicest possible way. It might be helpful to add that it's a 2002
- Is a 2008 ford focus with 102,000 miles worth the purchase? I'm looking into used cars to buy for my first car and I found a used 2008 ford focus that I like with about 102000 miles on it. I've heard ford cars don't last that long, so is it a waste to buy a ford with that many miles? I'm going to be using it to drive too and from college, so mostly highway miles.
