Auto choke for a 68 Ford galaxie?

I'm looking at an ad for this car and he says it needs an auto choke. How much would that cost? The ad doesn't say what type of engine it is or anything. Also, if it costs too much for me to fix right away, what would be the consequences of driving without it for a month or two? Is it still driveable?

Thanks!

Added (1). Also, does anyone have any experience with replacing the convertible, either DIY or professionally done? How hard is it to do yourself, or is it more worth it to just take it to an upholsterer's?

LOOK FOR A THERMOSTATIC CHOKE FOR THAT CAR. A FRIEND OF MINE HAD A 67 AND THAT THING WAS HUGE.

Probably has like a 289 v8 with a 2barrel on it. Pretty common. If it doesn't have a choke and the plate and/or lever is removed to you would have to source a few parts or a whole carb. Its really untelling what's missing without looking at it… But it does need some sort of choke or it will be hard to start and warm up, probably a universal manual cable actuator would be the easiest and cheapest solution IF it has the choke plate and lever still in place. As far as the convertible top that will wind up being pricey and yes have it professionally done.

There are two types of chokes that were common in that era. Electric - where an electric heater in the choke caused the choke coil to expand and cause the choke plate to open slowly as the engine warmed up. The other type used an exhaust gas bleed that fed hot exhaust gases to the choke coil causing it to open. Electric as more common. Another option was the manual choke where the driver operated the choke via a knob on the dash connected to a flexible cable - much like the throttle cable on a gas lawn mower. The engine probably has the choke plate in place (top of the carburetor intake), but the actuator system is missing.

The choke is only needed when the engine is cold. A cold engine needs a richer mixture. In those days, the choke closed off some air flow causing the richer fuel air mixture. Once the engine warmed up, the choke is really not in the system, not needed.

An auto choke on the older carbs was a very simple spring /coil that, as it heated (the engine warmed) would uncoil, and the attatched linkage would open the choke plate inside the carb. I can't imaghine what they cost now… But back inthe day they were a $5 part at the most…

If that's all it needed, he would have fixed it. Read the first paragraph of this article. Then re-read it
