Truck sputters at high rpm?
I have a 2003 ford ranger with a 3.0 v6. I just recently unhooked the muffler to make it sound deeper. When the truck is in park idling an I rev the engine it starts to sputter kinda like a rally car. It starts doing it at 3000 rpm when I hold the gas to rev it. But when is in drive I can get it to like 5000 rpm and it doesn't sputter at all an sounds normal. And I wanted to know why it does that? My friend has the same engine in his ranger but It doesn't do that to his. Is it because I took the muffler off and it ain't getting enough back pressure?
Some engine makers put an RPM limiter to prevent excessive RPMs without a load. My daughters Mercury "sputters" at 4000 RPM. Whether you engine has a problem or your friend's engine has a problem, I can't answer that. On a Ford, a P1270 code would be set if the engine speed was excessive for the current operating conditions. Also, disconnecting the exhaust will cause your O2 sensors to send erroneous signal to the computer and may affect gas mileage; may also set a DTC if done long enough.
Might be a misfire
Try taking a timing light and checking your timing marks, had a toyota pickup that used to have a rich fuel mixture problem and adjusting the distributor rotor fixed it right up.
Need to richen up air/fuel mix, dropping the exhaust leaned you out. Carb. Or injected? If computer controlled, need to change chip.
That's the reason. Leave it off and you may wind up with warped exhaust valves plus a ticket when the first cop stops you.
- I have a 2001 Ford Taurus Lx, it sputters and hesitates during acceleration? I have a 2001 Ford Taurus Lx, it sputters and hesitates during acceleration! It doesn't go pass 25 mph but will reach 5 rpms! Changed spark plugs and wires! Also changed coil pack! Both converters are working properly! Check engine light is not on! Doesn't run hot! Tire pressure indicator comes on though! Not sure what my next step is! I need help!
- When I start my truck my RPM's are very low (almost stalling) until I tap the gas? I'll start the truck and the RPMs will sometimes automatically go to below 1 then start dying out. I have to tap the gas quick and the RPM's will jump to around 3 then it will start the idle process. The truck runs fine otherwise I'm just concerned it might cause future problems. Is my throttle just getting stuck or something? 2003 Ford Ranger 2.3 4 Cyl Standard 160,000 Miles
- Ford ranger 3.0 v6 sputters when accelerating? My engine sputters when accelerating (especially after it's be warmed up or it's been sitting on a hot day) what could cause this? Coil pack? I've got new spark plugs inside. Does it need an ECU tune up? I'm also using 89 octane which helps but doesn't solve the problem
- What RPM should my car idle while driving and what RPM should I shift? I have a 2003 Ford Mustang V6. 5 speed manual transmission. This is not the first manual car I've owned, but I'm curious. I never really look but I've read in some places that in order to save gas you should shift at 2 RPM before I used to shift at around 3-3.5 RPM. Also what's a good RPM my car should idle at while I'm in gear? Let's say I'm driving in 3rd gear. What's the ideal RPM to stay at before needing to shift.
