Pickup traction: what should I put in the bed for winter?
1992 Ford Ranger.
I live in an apartment so firewood is out.
Something which will not be stolen.
Bags of road salt in waterproof bins?
Southern Ohio and winter may be nasty; need weight behind rear axle. Looking for ideas taking up only width of bed but less than 2' front to back since I want to use most of the bed for day to day stuff.
Rocks? Quarries around here but want something multi-purpose.
Blocks can be easy to take out or steal.
Buckets of water and if you get stuck you will have something to drink
Buckets of sand
If getting stuck is a real possibility like being in the woods fill buckets with survival gear, water, sand and camping gear. You might screw a piece of plywood over the buckets to keep them from getting stolen
I use to use 25 lb. Bags of sand, they were easy to lift.
Only 4 were needed to weigh down the trucks rear end.
Plus as stated above sand can get you going in an unsanded area.
Blue 24 X 18 X 20 Rubbermaid sealable storage containers filled with loose sand and gravel, Once filled, almost impossible to lift out due to weight. Other benefit is you can open it up and use some sand to get yourself moving if stuck. If cost is a factor, you can fill the bins with water.
They sell 60# fabric tubes of sand in most hardware/ home improvement stores. Plastic bins or hard bins filled with water, gravel, sand etc will slide around a lot if there not secured really well!
Like the other people said, sand, gravel, salt, whatever. Any heavy items will work.
Make sure you don't overload your vehicle or it can affect your steering and potentially break something.
Several 50 lb bags of sand should do it.
Sand bags are the cheapest.
Salt is good, but if you have a water-softner,… You may want to stock up on the softner salt cubes, and carry them for weight
I too have a Ranger. I use bags of sand, and carry a razor knife with me. The sand provides the weight and if I do get stuck in the snow, I cut the bag open and use the sand for traction.
Use bags of sand from a DIY Store.
Good luck
When I dig my truck out of the snow, I toss the snow into the bed of my truck. If it is an ice storm, 200lbs. Of play sand would suffice. That's 4 bags for those in Rio Lindo…
- What should I do to stop the rust and protect the bed of my truck? The bed of my truck (1990 Ford Ranger) is starting to rust. The rest of the paint and body is in good condition. I want to stop the rust. Should I get a bed liner like Line-X or should I just get it sanded and re-painted or is there some other alternative
- How to put the wiring harness back on a 93 ford ranger for the tail lights after I put the bed back on? How do I put the wiring harness back on a 93 ford ranger for the tail lights after I put the bed back on?
- Ford Mustang v6 abs/ traction control light on and brakes are locking up? I was driving yesterday and the abs and traction control light came on so I pulled over and shut off the car, I tried starting it again and the battery was dead. I got the car jumped and drove it about a mile and the brakes just started locking up and the cars lights were flashing, none of my Gage s were working and it said I have no gas when my gas tank was full. It was weird, does anyone maybe have a clue what could be wrong with it?
- Traction control causing shaking at takeoff? 2012 ford focus titanium, my first new car. I noticed pretty quick it shakes at around 10mph for a second. I take off pretty quick, could it be because traction control? The TC light doesn't come on. Any ideas?
