Does Ford have a fuel economy problem?

I know the 1.0L is an exception but I've been reading from Ward's and elsewhere that ecoboost branded engines are not delivering the fuel economy promised and expected from small displacement aluminum block/turbo designs. The same is said of stated power output for several ecoboost engine models. Perhaps the savings is in emissions?

Putting a small turbo engine in a large vehicle doesn't automatically make it super efficient. To produce the same power as a V8, a turbo V6 or I4 engine has to burn a similar amount of fuel. Because the vehicle weighs a similar amount, it takes a similar amount of power (and therefore fuel) to move it.

Now you should get some savings because the engine is a little lighter, but that might only reduce the total vehicle weight by 5 or 10 %.

So an Eco-boost Mustang has 1/2 the engine displacement as a V8 GT. But it won't get twice the fuel economy because you have to work the little engine harder to produce a similar amount of power. There's "some" saving, but not as much as you might think.

Hi the economy lobby in parliament is the issue here clean cheap to run low emisions is the name of the motor trade at present unless you go electric so as Ford has always been a bunch of petrol heads. Then a small 3 cylinder engine with a small turbo to make up for a smaller engine is there kind of thinking.

Eco boost engines are about the boost. Ford should seriously drop the eco part of the name.
