Which car would win in a race?

2005 ford five hundred vs 2011 volkswagen jetta sel

ford:
CURB WEIGHT 3664 lbs
v6
TORQUE 207 ft-lbs. @ 4500 rpm
HORSEPOWER 203 hp @ 5750 rpm
ENGINE SIZE 3.0 L

vw:
curb weight 3,082
v6 i think
torque 177 lb.-ft. @ 4,250RPM
horsepower 170hp @ 5,700RPM
engin size 2.5 L

It would really depend on the gearbox and skill of the driver. Though the 2 cars have different power ratings and weight, the hp/pound and torque/pound ratings of the 2 cars are actually extremely similar.

the biggest factor in a race like this would be the gearbox because by allowing the engine to stay closer to the peak of hp as it keeps accelerating, one will have more power available throughout the race.

if both have similar gearboxes (both automatics with the same number of gears and similar top speeds) then it would go down to which driver can get a faster start without either spinning the wheels or not using enough power.

and for reference the Jetta 2.5 SEL has an inline 5 engine. They sound super cool because of the overlap in combustion cycles.

It also depends on the "type of race". For a drag race/stoplight challenge, the lighter Jetta probably has the advantage. For an top speed/endurance race, it would be more of a consideration which car has better aerodynamics and/or a larger fuel tank so it has to stop and refuel less often. I'm going to guess the Jetta is probably the winner on the top end also. I just had a rental Jetta this past week, and very happy with its acceleration and performance. German cars are typically well engineered for autobahn speeds, and feel very calm quiet and steady at 80+mph. Ford fivehundred was not a very popular and long lived model just produced from 2005-2007, and changed the name back to Taurus in 2008 to avoid any potential confusion with the Fiat 500 which was just coming out in the Americas at that point.
