What would cause my 2004 Ford E350 5.4L 8cyl to have 2,000 rpm at idle and in neutral?

The van has 113,000 miles. Plugs changed at 100,000 miles. When started the rpms are at 2,000. Occasionally they will drop 100-200 rpm for 1-2 seconds then right back to 2,000 rpm. While driving there's no problem as long as the van is in drive. Once in a great while after driving around for a while it will be normal rpm when I put it in park. But usually works its way back to 2,000 rpm. Should I try to clean the throttle body or change the tps sensor? Any help will be much appreciated.

I would guess the TPS as I had this happen to our Ford and changing it fixed the problem, but do the tests to make sure, and maybe running a scan on the computer will also tell you.

Your intake manifold gasket has failed. Using a flashlight, look under it and you will see gasket material sticking out. Replace the intake gasket.

Not the TPS but you should remove the IAC and clean it. You may also want to look for a vacuum leak.

Deffinately clean the throttle body, ford has issues with that, also try unplugging the iac with key off, turn key on and plug back in, a quick relearn procedure

  • My 2000 Ford Taurus won't shift from neutral to reverse or neutral to park? Its curently in neutral but the steering colum shifter will go down to drive or drive 2 and will go back to neutral, but then it stops so I can't back up or park the car.since it doesn't go into park, I can't even take the keys out of the ignition. Any ideas?
  • What RPM should my car idle while driving and what RPM should I shift? I have a 2003 Ford Mustang V6. 5 speed manual transmission. This is not the first manual car I've owned, but I'm curious. I never really look but I've read in some places that in order to save gas you should shift at 2 RPM before I used to shift at around 3-3.5 RPM. Also what's a good RPM my car should idle at while I'm in gear? Let's say I'm driving in 3rd gear. What's the ideal RPM to stay at before needing to shift.
  • I bought an Actron CP9125 Code Reader to try and diagnose a rough idle at cold start on a 98 Ford 4.0 engine. The rough idle had not caused? The CEL to come on. I plugged the code reader in with just the key on and pressed read and the little asterisk goes half-way across the screen one time and stops. I press the read button again and it reads 0 codes. I was thinking it would scan multiple times to check for pending codes or other issues. I tried it with the engine running and the same thing happens. Is this code reader operating properly?
  • How to adjust throttle/idle on 1983 ford e350? It will start up just fine, but after it worms up it will konk… Konk… Konk out. However, if I slightly keep the accelerator pressed, it stays on just fine. I was thinking about adjusting the throttle or idle or choke. Where is it and how do I do it? If there's a picture somehow, that d be super helpful thanks
