What kind of coolant should I use?
1987 Ford Econoline E-250 conversion van.
I live in Florida and it easily gets over 100 degrees F in summer. I have never done a coolant flush/change, but it seems pretty easy. What coolant would be best to use on this vehicle?
Added (1). BTW: I this van has not been driven in years, so everything needs to be changed.
Standard coolant, ethylene glycol.
You 1987 Ford requires traditional green coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water.
I would flush out the cooling system, especially the radiator and fill it up with 50/50 antifreeze! Myself i use 50/50 prestone antifreeze!
I recommend that a trained and certified mechanic inspect the car and do the fluid changes. Without a proper flush procedure, the old coolant shall be trapped in many places. There's a need as to hoses and belts that need to be inspected and replaced. Same with motor oil and transmission oil and brake fluid oil and power steering oil. There's specific coolant as specified in the owner's manual.
Green mixed 50/50 with water. Best to use bottled water (a gallon is cheap at the grocery store). Some Florida municipal water has too much calcium in it.
You should also change the hoses and thermostat as well. While hoses are off, and thermostat is out, flush well with a garden hose. Also flush the heater core.
- What kind of Synthetic Oil does Ford use? GM recommends Dexos in all newer GM s. Does Ford have a specialty oil that they recommend/prefer? Especially something that won't void a warranty
- 2002 ford taurus coolant bubbling out of coolant tank cap? Coolant is bubbling out of the tank cap on my taurus. The coolant is a bit over the fill to line. The coolant is the normal green color. I don't think it having a bit of extra coolant in the tank is doing this. The cap itself maybe? I just bought this car and it didn't do this until today.

- How often should Coolant be changed? I have an 01 Explorer sport, 130,000. How often should I change the coolant in my car, and how do I know if its starting to go bad? Gauge says its running at operating temperature(not sure how accurate Ford gauges are though).
