What is the cheapest way to commute to Albany from Columbia County?

I recently accepted a job offer from the NY State Education Department that will begin on Thursday, October 8th. Currently, I live in Columbiaville (about 25 miles south of Albany via Route 9J) and will commute every morning to work before I'm able to save up enough money to rent an apartment out there. The job itself is on 89 Washington Avenue (in the big NYSED building) and I wanted to know the most cost-effective way of commuting as opposed to just driving 40 minutes out to 89 Washington Avenue and paying $8-10 every day to use the street-parking meters there (meaning, is there anywhere else I can park and just walk to work? Is there a cheap parking garage I should use and then just walk or bus to work? Is there any kind of public transportation that would take me from Columbiaville to Albany and back?).

I drive a gas-guzzling 2002 Ford Crown Victoria (was thinking of selling it once I move out to Albany for something better, but that is not the point of this post), so I will be spending quite a bit of change on gas alone and I want to know the best way to keep parking/commuting costs down so I can save money for an apartment faster. Thanks for all of your help! If you need me to clarify anything or explain anything in further detail, please don't hesitate to ask.

Your car should be getting 25mpg highway so you are looking at about 3 gallons a day in fuel - not bad at the current prices - parking is your biggest concern - why don't you contact the HR dept from the company where you will be working and ask them for suggestions and local alternatives.

Yeah, you get "winter" but the roads are plowed. Cheapest commute is a 150cc scooter. For winter you can get Heidenau Snowtex tires and a lap cover and muffs for for your hands. You should be able to find a cheap or free place to park.
