What causes gas smell in 2004 Ford Sport Trac after shutdown?

Chili, mostly.

A gas leak

Gas smell after engine is turned off

The EVAP system has a bad gasket.

A gas leak. The gas tank is under the bed in the rear. The gas line goes under the cab to the engine. You should not smell gas at all. I would check the mileage and see if you get close to what is advertised. If you do not and it is really low you might have a leak in the pressurized gas line from the tank to the engine.

This can occur on any vehicle but essentially telling us we have a fault. Fuel system venting? Anti spill valve? Leak? Fuel cap seal failed/split etc an investigation by main dealer is best way to solve but do check out owners club and sites such a petrol heads as they may be a common issue and a resolution offered.

Generally, a gas LEAK!

Start hunting for it. It's not a good thing.

Maybe it's at the engine.

Maybe it's the fuel line.

Maybe it's on the top of the fuel tank where you can't see it.
