Is my A/C killing my battery?
Ok so I have an issue. When i run my a/c in my car it seems to take alot out of my battery. At times especially when idling when a/c is on i can hear the air compressor running and clicking. It is kinda loud. Also seems to drain power from my radio. My radio starts to skip and if i run it too long or forget to turn it off before i turn off the car i will need a jump to start it. I was wondering if anyone has had this issue how did you resolve it or if yoy have any info on this situation your input is appreciated. I have a 2000 ford taurus. Just got a brand new battery yesterday and yesterday everything was fine but this morning it seems as if its happening again
There could be a few things that do what your describing. One is the A/C system is overcharged and is causing the engine RPM to drop to low at idle for the alternator to keep up with the demand. The clicking you hear would be the compressor clutch engaging and disengaging and if it is doing that a lot my thought of the overcharge would be a good possibility. The other thing that comes to mind is the alternator is not putting out it's max. You can't test that at any auto parts store or with a volt meter so you will need to take the car to a garage that has a load tester. It should not be that expensive as it will only take a few minutes to do the test. When you say the radio skips and it needs jumped I would say that the alternator is one of the causes. Dirty battery connections would be another.
- Battery light came on in my car and steering wheel locked but the car was still running what could it be? I drive a 1999 Ford Taurus I was pulling out of a parking lot and the battery symbol popped up and my steering wheel locked but the car didn't shut off. I applied the breaks slowly and the battery symbol went away and my steering wheel unlocked. I do believe I have some issues with the "computer" in the car i was wondering if this was the cause
- Amplifier connected straight to battery with on/off switch would damage battery in any way? - New alternator and battery but battery still won't charge in my ford explorer 93? My battery wouldnt charge So i just replaced my alternator a few days ago knowing it would fix the problem. It appears that the alternator was not the problem. I've got a brand new alternor and when i check the battery(running car), it just stays on 12.5V and doesn't go up. I tried using it yesterday and it just drained out on me. I tried 3 good batteries already and checked if they charge in my car but they don't. Oh, the alternator came with a volt regulator.
