Ford Taurus '98 intermittently died a few times this week, but started after trying again?

Added (1). Today it died right after starting again, but it wouldn't start right away. I had to turn it over 3 or 4 times before it would start. The mechanic says if it doesn't repeat the issue at the shop I would be paying for them to look at it, but they wouldn't be able to fix because everything would test fine unless they can reproduce the problem. I know nothing about cars, what should I do? Please give me some advice, I'm really tight on money right now.

Assuming the run a scan for fault codes and found nothing. Then we likely have a fault that won't show up as a code. Eg vacuum leak, sticking idle speed control valve, egr etc. Though a good technician with diagnostic tool can check all these out but yes it takes time and fees can mount.
Check our basics first for self, is fuel filler cap and seal ok? Has fuel filter been changed at service point? Do we get fuel pump run when ignition goes on? Are vacuum pipes leak free and connected? Are wiring connections tight? Few minutes checking for visual faults may assist here. Otherwise it's a job for a technician.
