Do I need Valve Cover Gasket?
Do I need the actual gasket, or can I use just gasket maker, or should I be using both? My father insists it's all I need, but I just want to make sure before I take everything apart.

Put gasket maker on the valve cover. Then stick the gasket onto the gasket maker so it holds it in place on the valve cover. Make sure the head is completely clean.
I get the actual gasket. Normally it is neoprene rubber so is reusable. That is what they use in the factories when they make the car. Some manufacturers use cork gaskets and they are good for a couple of compressions before they get rock hard. Then it is just cheaper to get new ones made out of cork as there's only about a zillion of them that were made. If you are going to use the sealant than only on one side such as the valve cover (as that is flexible). Leave the head clean because this thing comes off and on when it needs to be removed. (usually to adjust valve gaps)
