2002 Ford Taurus won't start after sitting for a month in the cold?

My 2002 Ford Taurus has been sitting in the cold since December 7th, 2015, and it is now January 27th, 2016. On January 15th, my Dad tried starting the car, and said that it wouldn't start. He asked if I ever had problems with starting it in the past, which I haven't. On January 24th, I tried starting the car myself and nothing happened. The car wouldn't turn over. No lights came on. And neither did the radio. The lock & unlock button also wouldn't work. He tried charging the battery twice, but nothing changed. He says it may be the starter, but could it be anything else?

Try jump starting it with another car. If no luck pour some hot water on the battery othrrwise just get a new battery. They only cost about $100

Is it cold in your part of the country? You need to know something about batteries. When they go dead all the acid goes into the cells leaving mostly water in the battery. The water freezes and there's no way a charger will be able to charge it. You can try to put the battery in a warm spot for a few days and then try to charge it but most times when it freezes it will crush the cells and they break up leaving the battery useless. Buy a battery.

The frikkin' battery is dead.

Your problem isn't with the starter if none of your dash lights, power locks etc., do anything even with a new fully charged battery installed - your problem is that no power is getting from the battery to anything else.

2 ideas -

First thing I'd check is if one of the battery connections has been separated from the wire it connects to. If not, next thing I'd check is if one of your battery cables is completely disconnected or severed somewhere down the line. Follow both battery cables from the battery to where they connect next to see if a rodent/animal might have chewed through one of the battery cables and severed it. A car sitting idle for a long period of time can be attractive to rodents and small animals trying to escape the cold. A disconnected terminal or a severed cable would both result in a no-power situation.

If the battery cables are fine, then let me ask this: Did you or anyone else try to jump-start the car when it was first found dead? If someone hooked the jumper cables up backwards (+ to -, - to +) while trying to jump it, that could have ruined some fusible links (these are wired into the electrical system prior to the underhood fuse box, for example, to prevent catastrophic damage if someone tries to jump start a car by hooking up the cables wrong…) and that could be the cause of power not reaching anything even with a new battery. If that happened, you'd have to replace the ruined fusible link(s) to allow power to reach the fuse box again.

Charge the battery.

  • Why is the A/C on 2002 Ford Taurus is not blowing cold air My freon is fine but when I have the A/C on max the motor engages intermittently. Should the motor run constantly while the A/C is on high? If it doesn't, any idea what could be wrong? Coincidentally, a squeal from the belt started when I started to use the A/C. It squeals when I accelerate, whether the A/C is on or not.
  • My car won't start in very cold weather! What's wrong with it and what's the solution? I've got a Ford Taurus 2003. When it gets very cold about = it cranks but won't start. There's no problem with the battery and the cables are tightened and fixed. However when I open the fuse box and move the fuses up and down and push them down real hard it starts just as normal. Any ideas?
  • I have a 2002 Ford Taurus that won't start? It started one minute, I drove home. Later that night it just wouldn't start. It cranks and tries but fails. The pump turns on. I'm assuming it's not getting fuel. My question is what could cause it to not start. Or what would prevent fuel from getting to the engine beside the injectors and the fuel filter
  • 2001 ford Taurus won't start when its cold out? Hi, I have a car that I'm having trouble with. For awhile I could get it started in the cold weather just by hooking up a charger and it would start right away. The battery is new and at full. We think its a fuel problem, however the heater in this car doesn't work either. Any suggestions, where do I start with my trouble shooting? when the weather is warm, the car starts every time. I'm sorry, yes it does turn over.
