1997 Ford Taurus SHO misfire/horrible sputtering acceleration. NO ENGINE CODE?
I just recently purchased a 97 SHO taurus (3.4L 32v V8) and i have a misfire issue i'm trying to weed out. The engine has 149k miles and presumably stock plugs and coils at least on the rear as they are a day job to get to. I'm going to try and explain this as best as possible as its a weird issue. SO, turn the key and the car starts right up, at idle you can hear and slightly 1-3 mis-fires a second. This does not vary and will stay constant. The rpm needle does not seem to react to misfire (NOTE: not at any point since owning the car have a i gotten any check engine lights!) Now i put the car in R to back out of driveway. Throttle responds great, car shifts smoothly. Now i put in D and start moving down the street, now the problem presents itself. I simply can't go past 1/4 throttle without horrible misfires kicking in. I can't accelerate fast at all as i have to feather the throttle to maintain power. Now clearly the 1st step is to replace the plugs and coils which i have coming in in the mail (as well as UIM and valve cover gaskets) but since i have to tear alot apart to get to the rear plugs anyways, i was wondering if anyone has experienced something similar to what i'm dealing with and can tell me other things i should be looking for while the engine is semi-apart. (valves etc.) I only ask because i'm not getting an engine code which makes part of me believe its deeper than just a tune-up. I'm also only 21 years old! ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING APPRECIATED!
You should let that car go. Sell the parts. It's 22 years old, it doesn't make sense to put more money into it.
Try getting the fuel pump pressure tested. Most mechanics will do it for free.
If you are not getting codes either you have a junk code reader or the motor problem is due to a fuel problem which is not monitored such as low fuel pressure or bad gasoline. Take a mason jar and fill it half full with gas from your fuel line at the motor. Let it sir for 20 minutes and look for water on the bottom of the jar.
If the CEL never came on you may also have a bad computer.

- 97 ford taurus sputtering? So engine was sputtering on startup until it warmed up. Would occasionally do it during acceleration. Put some gumout in, thinking it was a fuel injector. Problem is now much more frequent and causes a major loss in power. What else could be the issue?
