Shipping weight miscalculated?

I run a hot shot truck. Ford superduty powerstroke. Recently I moved a boat for a customer from Orlando, Florida to El Paso, Tx. The weight he gave me before I took the job was for 2k pounds and when I weighed the boat at the scales it was 4,760lbs. Now what should I charge him extra in fuel for the extra 2,760lbs?

I'd charge a fuel sure charge depending on the miles driven and try to re negotiate the price of the haul from point a-b on mileage

One point though is, was the weight given to you verbally or in writing. If in writing then you can legally make a claim as you were misinformed.

If verbally, then regretfully it is your word against the client. But at least you can try.

I would charge him whatever you would/should have quoted for the correct weight of 4760lb load - if you have documentation for the boat weight it should make it easier. I suspect your fuel mileage wasn't affected more than 15-20 for the extra tonnage. I know my truck I have hauled a 12ft enclosed uhaul trailer jammed full of stuff and was getting 14mpg - and a small open trailer lightly loaded I maybe see a 1-2mpg difference both numbers are 5-6 mpg below normal (non-towing) mpg. Hence the aerodynamics seem to play the biggest role.

I've though about shipping a power boat from Fl to Dallas, so many more to choose from that don't have over inflated prices like they do here… But yea this El Paso guy needs to own up some cash he knew what it weighed there's too much info on the internet

  • Weight difference between I/O and Outboard boat? I've been looking at used boats and I noticed that boats that have an I/O engine are about twice the weight of boats that have an outboard motor. For example, a 17' bowrider with an I/O sterndrive weights almost 2000 lbs, whereas a 17' Outboard bowrider only weighs about 900 lbs. Does this sound right to you guys? Weight does matter to me because my towing vehicle would be a V6 Ford Ranger.
