I would have liked the Ranger. I was constantly hauling **** around the country.

Sports car would be much better. Why would you buy a small truck? If you're gonna go big go all the way.
He'll get in less trouble in the Ranger.
A truck is definitely more useful and won't be anywhere near as expensive to insure. You can actually use the truck to make money by hauling stuff.

Insurance on a sports car will be huge.
IMO, sports and pony cars are never a good choice for teen driver. Get him a Ranger, it will be much safer for him and for everybody else.
At high speeds, the sports car is safer since it can maneuver better and stay stable at highway speeds. But it is unpractical.
As long as you drive slow, the truck is safer. And the truck is more practical for adverse weather conditions and trunk space.
