My truck over heats when A/C is on in park/idle?

1991 Ford Ranger XLT - 2.3L 4 Cylinder

Only over heats when A/C is on and is in park/idle. If I turn the A/C off it goes back to normal temp.

My old car which was a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero had 2 fans - big one for the engine and a smaller one for the condenser. However, this truck only has the big fan for the engine ran on a pulley. I'm assuming because of its age.

Anyway, the radiator is fairly new just a few years old, coolant level is full and is bright neon green/yellow so it's obviously still fresh. The fan spins normally as well. I'm thinking maybe there's a clog somewhere?

Also, not sure if this is relevant but the truck was extremely low on freon so i used A/C pro and used the dial on top of the can and set it to that current temperature as instructed, then i added freon until it was in the correct spot on the dial. It was fine but out of curiosity today I hooked it back of up to see what the dial said and the needle was way over in the red area.

If anybody has any ideas as to what could be causing this it would be great to hear back. Also, if there's certain things I should check let me know that as well.

First thing trhis truck takes r -12 refridgerent which you cvant get unless your have the certifacation for handling refridgerent… Next you say the raditor is fairly new the rangers had about 4 different readitors for the 2.3 engine do you have the right one does it have 2 rows or one? If one its the wrong one next is the the a/c condensor clean along with the raditor if the fins are full of bugs it won't cool also is the fan shroud still on the truck? If not get one

  • Why is my engine shaking during idle at stops and park? I got a ford 1999 taurus SE with 100,000 miles on it. I just changed the spark plugs and wireset out and it got even worse. I was thinking the IAC might of just gone bad but before I go get one I wanted to ask if there was anything else I could test before buying more new stuff for it.
  • I bought an Actron CP9125 Code Reader to try and diagnose a rough idle at cold start on a 98 Ford 4.0 engine. The rough idle had not caused? The CEL to come on. I plugged the code reader in with just the key on and pressed read and the little asterisk goes half-way across the screen one time and stops. I press the read button again and it reads 0 codes. I was thinking it would scan multiple times to check for pending codes or other issues. I tried it with the engine running and the same thing happens. Is this code reader operating properly?
  • My car over heats in stop signs? My car over heats at a stop however it will go down with driving. It will also go down if I turn on my ac, which means that the fans are turning on just not on their ow. What else could it be My car is a 2002 Ford Focus zx5 and its automatic
  • I have a 2006 Ford focus zx4. It over heats? The cooling fan makes a grinding noise when it attempts to come on. Do I need a mechanic or can I fix this issue at home. I'm just a regular person who doesn't mind diy to conserve on the dollars. I do know a little about using tools tho.
