Is it better to replace or rebuild my motor?
Its a 1994 ford ranger xlt with a 3.0 V6 with the A4LD trans and 2WD. It has 273,000 miles on it (bought it with 123000 in 2004) it is my baby and has outlasted many other cars. It is leaking transmission fluid into the oil pan somehow and I had to stop a leak at the timing cover. I don't want to get rid of it but need options. Other than above problems everything else is fixable myself but if necessary I can remove the engine and rebuild it myself. Also replacing engine would be a used motor from a running car/truck with much lower miles. Any help would be appreciated.
Sounds like the timing cover leak is already repaired. Do you mean transmission fluid leaking on the oil pan, not into the oil pan? Sounds like you just need to remove the transmission and replace the front seal. Its a simple job so go ahead and replace the rear seal while the drive shaft is out.
You are probably looking at 1700.00 for a rebuilt short block. Or you can get prices for all the parts you would need, plus redoing heads, crank, cam, cylinder walls etc. Or you can check the wrecking yards and find on with low miles and take your chances one that.
It seems impossible for ATF to get into an engine, there's air between them, the fluid would just run onto the ground, If your oil level is rising, it has to be water or gasoline. I think a better used engine would be your best bet
Those transmissions were extremely problematic for many years. I believe it was more because of parts than design. A rear seal could also be the problem but definitely have a shop fix the tranny. They all need to go into a shop once and they should last a long time afterwards. For the motor, go to a junkyard probably. A lot of rangers get scrapped because of their automatic transmissions going out, and a good engine is left under the hood to sit.
First you would have to do a compression test to verify if you have to pull the engine to rebuild it if the compression is good. If there's drastic drops in compression a remanufactured long block would be the way to go.
- What is the difference between a boat inboard motor and a car motor? I need to replace the motor in my boat and I have a Ford 300 6 cyl. Engine in my back yard. Can i use it for the boat? What needs to be modified?
- How much would it cost to completely rebuild a car? I currently own a 2000 Ford Mustang. It has 180K miles on it, rust, and some cosmetic damage on both bumpers. I'm also not sure where to go for this kind of extensive work. Also wondering if it's possible to go to anywhere like a ford dealership and order the same year and model car and purchase it
- How to rebuild an engine for better MPG? I'm gonna rebuild an 83 Lincoln Mark VI, now I know what most people think about Ford but I got it because I had one when I was in high school. People like Cadillac I like Lincoln. It runs good but its been sitting for 2 years in a barn, so before I start buying parts for the engine. Is there a way to rebuild the engine for better MPG?
- How much would it cost to rebuild a 1982 Ford 200 inline 6? No performance modification. Want it painted as well. Will remove engine myself when I do then take it. Average cost? Los Angeles area.
