How often do I need my coolant flushed?

I have a 1993 ford ranger.

Will be in ford service manual recommended changes.

Every 3-5 years. 3 is better. Drain and refill is fine. Flushing doesn't hurt but with frequent changes, which I would suggest, drain and refill is plenty. The advantage of frequent changes is to prevent internal rust for less overheats. Which are much more likely to leave you stranded or destroy your engine than anything that might happen with motor oil. If you do overheat, stop driving immediately, get a tow if you don't know how to wrench it, and as the first thing to try replace the thermostat with a factory thermostat.

For recommended maintenance frequency on this and other items check the manual. Do everything.

You really should check your owner's manual and go by what it says. You don't want to put in the wrong type of antifreeze for your car. Also, it will also tell you how often to change your coolant.

If you're asking the question about changing as well as flushing, I suggest not using the all too common ethylene glycol - instead use Propylene Glycol because it is non-toxic, non-lethal and lasts longer. In some cases the label or brand should state the specs but if not every couple years should keep everything in good running order.

  • What color coolant do i need? I have a 1998 Ford Windstar. The coolant is so low i can't see what color it is, and i know its bad to mix colors. My dad was the last one to fill it up but hes since passed away so i have no way of knowing what color was put in. So my question is, how do i know what color to use? I don't want to have to flush the system but i will if thats the only option. Please only answer if you know. Please don't guess.
  • 2002 ford taurus coolant bubbling out of coolant tank cap? Coolant is bubbling out of the tank cap on my taurus. The coolant is a bit over the fill to line. The coolant is the normal green color. I don't think it having a bit of extra coolant in the tank is doing this. The cap itself maybe? I just bought this car and it didn't do this until today.
  • Should I get my transmission flushed? I have a 2000 Ford Ranger with 145,000 miles on it. At 74,000 miles and almost ten years ago, I had the transmission flushed and the filter replaced. Unfortunately, I did not stay on the usual 30,000 mile/2year. Schedule for changing the fluid. Some people have said that flushing an old transmission may actually cause problems. The fluid still looks great and is a nice clear reddish/pink. The transmission also runs fine. Should I do it? I plan to keep the vehicle a couple more years.
  • How often should you service fuel injector flush? My car model is 2010 Ford Focus, and the dealership told me I need to get it service. My car mileage is around 62,000 miles.
